The bar of his dreams

Without knowing anything about his appearance, Jackson knows that Sofia is the ideal woman to embody the spirit of the place. He then asked the hostess to come and work in his bar. This is called "The White Countess". Jackson carefully chosen artists, musicians and hostesses working in his bar. The area will be distinguished and functions as a projection of the inner world of Jackson. The latter withdrawing from the outside world to find refuge in his nightclub, reflecting all its aspirations. Jackson was the victim of his fate. He became the master of the game, "White Countess", the way a director directing actors, musicians and decor. Places have something artificial that returns to the field of theater. Thus, to make a dramatic tension in the atmosphere of the bar, Jackson decided to invite groups from the political spectrum antagonists. Matsuda offers his help to attract a politicized. The real world will then break into the closed world of Jackson.

Dream and Reality

James Ivory's film creates a tension between artifice and reality. Thus, the image of the city of Shanghai is between sets in cardboard recalling the golden age of Hollywood studios while other outdoor scenes are especially realistic.
